Ren Hang—I know it’s not wood, but the lotus bloom always has me thinking about the expansiveness of spring. There’s this meditation (there is also one that is actually about the lotus blooming from the mud) where you draw the water from the kidneys upwards on the inhale and send the fire of the heart downwards on the exhale. It creates a steam that you can then expand into the whole body as a kind of inner sauna. It’s humid and expansive. In the lotus meditation itself the seeds of the lotus are the kidneys and the lotus bloom rises from the heart, but the process—the interaction—of these two elements is the hot, damp humidity of the wood element. The process of the lotus growing before the bloom. Not quite the muck and not quite the flower; the period where the growth is verdant and strengthening.
